Good thing for me they are located on the east coast.
Though I welcome the challenge.

Assignment

I have already fallen off the wagon of doing my assignment. Next week I will be better, so here it is:

Nothing is the same
When we give names to things, we often assume that everything that goes by that name is alike.

Take something in nature-two dandelions-and look at them for five minutes, listing how they are different from each other. Take two leaves from the same tree and do the same thing. Take two peas from the same pod and do the same thing. Nothing is the same. No thing is the same. Everything is itself one of a kind.

Do this for a week, then look back at these pairs of things again and make a new list. You will find more differences because you have been exercising your powers of observation.

Genius is looking at thing in an unhabitual way.

Work in the area where you are unsure, in places you've not been before.

Paxton Gate and Flowers?!

Aside from being a super cool store with plants and curiosities Paxton's Gates does landscape design, interior design and now flowers for events. Like I have said before, even though they are competition, it is great to see the interesting work that they are doing and share it. A little competition is always healthy!

Great stuff!

The Vegetative Nervous System
museum kunst palast Düsseldorf, since 2006

Gerda Steiner and Jorge Lenzlinger have some amazing art. One of the things that is amazing about it is not only its visual form but the thought process behind it. They use fertilizer to create some of the organic qualities of their sculptures.

Last Assignment

So, I skipped a week since I was out of town.
The last assignment was to draw a tree looking at the structure and the shadows on the leaves and such. Here is my final result. I do have to say I didn't pick the best tree but the most interesting thing about this tree was the pattern that was on the trunk.

Competition

I am not afraid of competition but rather like to see what my peers are doing and to see that they are successful. So this brings me to Domestic Construction. They are doing what on the East Coast what I would love to develop my business to be here on the West Coast.

It is a combination of art installations and styling for commercial, residential and event projects. These girls are creative and I like what they are doing. I think a trip to NYC may be in order.

Check this out! Carpe Donuts in Chancellorsville. They have a cart that you can use for weddings...now wouldn't that be a treat with a nice cup of Blue Bottle coffee?!

Ric Heitzman is another interesting artist who is doing many things such as voices for movies. However, I am drawn to some of his most recent work, a series of illustrations of palms. They are simple yet complex and great inspiration for some wedding decor...don't you think?

After my own heart

Matteo Ilasco is a company started by Meg Mateo Ilasco. With a background in many things including architecture makes me like her and relate to her all the more. Her works is stunning and ranges from illustrations, books to art direction. What got me on to her is the new magazine that she is part of, Anthology...which is super cool, thinking of getting a subscription.

One other thing that she does is the sample sale Modern Economy, which I will be sure to attend the next time it is happening.

Tracy Kendall

Encountering creative people and their works of genius is so thrilling. Today is Tracy Kendall who makes wall coverings. However these aren't your typical wall coverings and for me they get my creative juices flowing. I can see any of these being perfect to adorn a wall for a party or wedding.

Learning by Heart - Assignment:Trees and Shadows

Well, I was supposed to do this in conjunction with last weeks assignment. However I wasn't reading ahead, so I will just do it this week.

The assignment:
Look at a tree and it's shape. Look at the part the leaves play in making the shape you see and look at the part the trunk and branches play in making the structure you see. Look for patterns made where the foliage is dense or light. Look for dark and light and other color changes that come about on the leaves.

Look at a tree for one hour in the week. Write every specific thing you see about that tree. Make a list of other things that you think are related in structure to a tree.

If anyone is following these with me, send me your drawing and I will post it. See you next week.

Learning by Heart (Art on Friday) - Assignment: Shadows

To continue from last Friday, I half way completed my assignment doing three days out of seven. I just kept forgetting but when I did sit down it was fun and let my creativity wander.

To recap the assignment was to look at shadows and write down what you saw for a week. Here is what I came up with.
